Are you wondering what breed the sheep are? Read on for more info!
The sheep are a new breed that is being developed near Hexham for conservation grazing and small scale regenerative agriculture. They are based on Wiltshire Horns, a breed that sheds its wool and so does not usually require shearing. These have been crossed with the Scottish native breeds Soay and Castle Milk Moorit sheep to improve hardiness for northern climates and for improved resistance to parasites.
Their fleece colour comes from these Scottish breeds. There is also a dash of Blue Faced Leicester for increased size and good maternal traits. Though they are named Hexhamshire Horns we have asked for mainly hornless sheep to reduce problems with electric fencing.
